George's tribute to John

The Anthology was not the first time that the remaining Beatles recorded together after John was murdered.

George recorded "All Those Years Ago" as a tribute to John Lennon after his death. Released on May 11, 1981, the song featured Ringo on drums and Paul on backing vocals.

RIP, John! What a lovely song.

Paul's reaction to John's death

This is Paul McCartney's notorious first public reaction to the news of John Lennon's death. He come under a lot of fire from the press for his response, "Drag, isn't it?".

Later Paul explained in an interview for Playboy, "I had just finished a whole day in shock and I said, 'It's a drag.' I meant 'drag' in the heaviest sense of the word, you know: 'It's a — DRAG.' But, you know, when you look at that in print, it says, 'Yes, it's a drag.' Matter of fact."

The Death of John Lennon

Today marks the 29th anniversary of the day John Lennon was murdered on December 8th, 1980.

Here is a brief rundown of what happened on that tragic day in New York City:

-That morning photographer Annie Leibovitz did a photo shoot for Rolling Stone magazine with John and Yoko at their apartment (The Dakota). The image used became iconic.

-Later Lennon gave what would be his last ever interview to a radio DJ in San Francisco for the RKO Radio Network.

-John and Yoko left The Dakota to work on "Walking on Thin Ice," an Ono song featuring Lennon. On their way out, John was approached by Mark David Chapman, who asked him to sign a copy of "Double Fantasy." Mark would go on to murder Lennon later that night.

(Here John is pictured signing Mark's copy of "Double Fantasy")

-John and Yoko spent several hours at the studio before returning home. They arrived back at The Dakota at 10:50pm, because John wanted to say goodnight to Sean before he fell asleep. Yoko walked ahead of John into the building, and Mark Chapman (who had been waiting there all along) fired 5 shots at Lennon. 4 bullets hit him, all inflicting serious wounds.

-Lennon was taken to Roosevelt Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15pm.

29 years later, the details of this day are still just as heart-breaking. Isn't it sad that a man who spent the last several years of his life campaigning for peace was violently killed for no reason? We miss you, John.
